It is my college roommates birthday and we are all out celebrating at her favorite pub. I go to the bar to order a round of drinks when I realize that there are four of my students at the bar too. I try to look away but one of them notices and they all turn to look at me.

Proactive Response - Brianne Duffy

Without drawing too much attention, I would try to escape the glare from the four students and pretend I did not see them, to ensure I had a moment to clearly think about the situation and find the proper solution.

If they were underage, I would then notify the bartender of the underage drinkers at their bar. If the four kids were all clearly intoxicated or on their way, I would make sure they had a ride home, provide cab service or notify their parents if I had means to do so (contact information on hand). If they don't have a safe ride and are just kicked out of the bar, I would wait outside with them to see that their parents or a safe ride is provided.

If the students did get in legal trouble, the school district policies would then determine what their status in school would be - suspended, etc.

From there out, I would encourage the school to hold a seminar or assembly to discourage underage drinking and the consequences of doing so.
